Bioshock - Review

Eight years; that’s how long I’ve been waiting for this game to be released. Eight years. As the spiritual successor to System Shock 2, this game has been highly anticipated by both myself and, thanks to some great marketing and feedback from the media, the rest of the world (the part that owns a killer PC or an Xbox 360 that is).

With such high hopes resting on a single game, it’s easy to fall short of the high mark that hype tends to set for all of us. So does Bioshock rise above this mark, or fall short like so many other games that get wrapped up in hype?

In short, it lives up to it…oh hell yes, does it live up to it.

Bioshock places you in the role of a seemingly normal man on a seemingly normal plane trip, seemingly traveling home to visit your family in the year 1960. I know; that’s a lot of "seeminglys." But that’s part of the beauty of this game; not everything is always as it seems.

When your plane mysteriously crashes in the middle of the Atlantic, you (the only survivor) are able to swim to what looks like a lighthouse in the middle of open sea. Upon entering the lighthouse however, it quickly becomes apparent that this place is anything but the norm, as a miniature submarine whisks you to an enormous underwater city. Welcome to Rapture: a would-be paradise torn asunder by genetic experimentation, broken dreams, and capitalist greed.

In the nightmarish Rapture, how you choose to survive is completely up to you (well, for the most part). What your survival hinges on is the collection of Adam, a type of stem cell that allows wielders to rewrite their genetic code, granting them the ability to use Plasmids (i.e. supernatural powers). So what’s the catch? You need to collect this Adam from parasite-ridden little girls called the Little Sisters. Unfortunately, the process of stealing Adam from the Sisters kills them in the process. So what’s a man to do? Will you kill the Little Sisters on your quest to become a Plasmid-slinging god? Or will you save them and risk weakening yourself down the line? How you choose is completely up to you.

Either way you go, there is a price to pay in your quest for power or salvation. Before you can even approach a Little Sister, you’d better be prepared to deal with the Big Daddy that watches over her. Big Daddies, enormous protectors in vintage scuba gear, are fast, armed to the teeth, and very dangerous. Combined with the already insane, mutated denizens already inhabiting Rapture and the always-active security systems, you’re going to have your hands full.

And this is why Bioshock gracefully shines. No other game out there (aside from the origin-sharing System Shock and Deus Ex series) has been able to convincingly pull off a freeform action RPG system as Bioshock has here. Do you want to be someone who uses guns mostly? Go for it; spend your Adam to do more physical damage. Would you rather light your enemy on fire with a snap of your fingers? Spend Adam on improving your Plasmids. Prefer to take a stealthier route? Bone up on security skills with your Adam and hack Rapture’s security system in your favor. Hell, become a hybrid of the three! The game loves to let you experiment with your many skills and use them in combination together to aid in your survival.

For example, say you’ve near fatally injured an enemy with your guns, only to have them run in fear to the nearest medical station. What he doesn’t know is you’ve already hacked that station, and instead of healing himself, he’s just poisoned himself instead. Or maybe you’ve lit someone up with the flamethrower, and they immediately dive into a nearby pool of water. Put the proverbial toaster in the tub and light him up with a lightning bolt in the water. Experiment and have fun.

Bioshock’s only issue in this area is that, aside from deciding whether to save the Little Sisters, the game can sometimes feel a bit restrictive when it comes to upgrading your skills. Where games like System Shock 2 gave you the wide breadth you need to experiment with being strictly a gunner, a hacker, or a psi (plasmid) user, Bioshock practically forces you to be a jack-of-all-trades in many situations. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, a greater range of possible choices to make would have been appreciated.

Bioshock is played completely from the first-person perspective. Switching between using your plasmids and physical weapons is as easy as pulling the left and right triggers. I was curious as to why you couldn’t have both equipped and ready to use and reload at the same time however. In more dire situations, it was a pain the in ass to switch back and forth only to be caught waiting for the reloading animation to catch up between weapon switching (which is unforgivably long in most cases). Nonetheless, it does do a good bit to add to the tension of the game.

Story elements in Bioshock, also depicted entirely in the first-person, are delivered via well-animated scripted sequences and incredible voiced-over recordings scattered throughout Rapture. While you’ll only actually meet a handful of the colorful characters in this underwater metropolis face-to-face, the great acting done by the voice-over cast really helps you to build a connection with each of them as each of their individual stories unfold via the recordings throughout your progress.

Sporting use of the acclaimed Unreal Engine, Bioshock is easily one of the most graphically beautiful and meticulously detailed games I’ve ever played. While a rare few of the character models aren’t quite up to par with other top-tier games like Gears of War or the Darkness, never before have I been in a game where I was marveled with every new room I entered. Many times, I found myself just sitting and staring at the glistening, water-soaked environments. Not once did I see the level design repeated anywhere throughout the entire game. Each new place you discover is a unique site to behold.

While both the Xbox 360 versions and the PC versions are comparable to each other for the most part, the PC version does sport a slightly altered interface to accommodate PC users. Just make sure that if you are getting this for a PC that you have a monster video card that supports DirectX 10, to ensure you get all of that next-generation graphical goodness.

A special note should also be made for the sound direction in Bioshock. With clever use of classic music throughout, and the constant, foreboding sounds of mutants and Big Daddies roaming the halls of Rapture, Bioshock pulls you in and doesn’t let go.

Conclusion

What are you waiting for? At the moment Bioshock is hands-down the game of the year. With stunning graphics, a compelling story, exciting gameplay, and excellent sound direction, this will be the game to own for months (if not years) to come. And with multiple endings, you’re guaranteed more than a single play-through. Buy this game immediately. And if you don’t own a decent PC or an Xbox 360, would you kindly buy one? It’s worth the price of admission.
